Rambo: A Day At The Fair

We took our 1965 Red Valiant Convertible to the local fair for an antique car show. We decided to take Rambo with the girls and us for the day. Rambo’s day at the fair was one of the highlights of his life. Everyone asked what kind of animal he was and if he would bite, then they always asked if they could hold him and give him attention. He loved every bit of attention he was getting that day. The sights and smells of the fair was really exciting to him. He loved walking all over the fairgrounds and exploring all the new things he found. He really enjoyed watching the girls go round and round and back and forth on the merry mixer. I thought he would get dizzy jerking his head back and forth and side to side but he was fascinated with the ride. Needless to say, Rambo was exhausted by the end of the day, but he was happy that he had been included in the family event. Rambo slept for most of 2 days after his day at the fair.

Rambo looks like the endangered silver coated black-footed ferret of South Dakota. Rambo loved people and he loved all the attention he received when he went away. Rambo had a security blanket and we never left home without it.

Rambo had an upper respiratory infection and I took him to the veterinary’s office and he got a shot and medicine. On the way home, I stopped at the Penny saver Office to run an ad and it was so cold and I didn’t want to leave him in the car, so I wrapped him up in his blanket and took him inside. The worker thought I had a baby and asked if he could see the baby. Boy, was he shocked when I unwrapped Rambo! He shreiked and backed up against the wall. I just smiled and said “I think he looks just like his Daddy!”

Whenever we got out his harness and leash, he was ready to go for a walk or a ride in the car. Quite often my daughter, Daphne, would take Rambo for a walk with my daughter, Holly, and her cow she was showing for 4H. It was quite a site to see, 2 girls with a ferret and a cow on leashes, 2 dogs and several cats going down the road on a warm summer day.

My Best Buddy Is A Ferret!

Ferrets make the neatest pets, but they do need a lot of attention. My ferret, Dakota, has been around cats all of his life. He likes to dog pile my house cats, Blackie, Chubby, and Squeaky. They play with him and they are the best of friends.

My ferret’s diet consists of dry cat food and ferret food mixed half and half. A ferret needs a good ferret food for the nutritional value to keep your pet healthy and maintain a good coat. I give my ferret ZuPreem Premium Ferret Diet Food 4 lb.

Dakota really likes milk products but milk can cause diarrhea. My ferret really enjoys a dollop of Cool whip as a treat.

Ferrets need to drink tons of water so supply your ferret with a large water container in their cages.

Ferrets always have a stash. (a place to call their own and hide their stolen treasures) Dakota loves anything plastic. He takes potato chip bags, cereal bags, and anything in plastic bags he can drag to his stash. He also likes to take the inner linings out of everyone’s shoes. I have had ferrets that are sock monsters, potato poachers, maxi pad bandits, and eyeglass case thieves.

My ferrets hate to go to the veterinary. They need to get cat and dog feline leukemia shots and rabies shots. I even had a ferret that needed a hip adjustment. Ferrets can also contract upper respiratory infections from humans. I had one ferret that went to the vet’s just to make sure her buddy, Shadow, was coming back home.

You need to ferret proof your house to make a safe place for your ferret to live. Ferrets can get in a small hole and if they can get their head into a hole, the rest of the body goes in. You need to block all openings because a ferret is curious and that gets them into trouble. An open door is an invitation to go outside and a ferret makes a quick get-a-way to get outside.

Ferrets like baggies, paper bags, and empty Coke cartons to crawl into and sleep or hide. I also made a fleece pocket blanket for Dakota to sleep under. You can get lots of accessories for your ferret.

Ferrets can easily have fleas. Fleas can irritate their skin and cause them to itch excessively and cause their skin to bleed. This is one of the best Ferret Flea and Tick Spray you can purchase for your ferret.

A weekly bath is good for your ferret. A good shampoo with a lanolin base will keep your ferret’s fur and skin in good condition. Tea Tree Oil is a very good shampoo for your ferret's skin and coat.
Marshall Ferret Shampoo Original w/Baking Soda 8oz is another excellent choice for ferret shampoo.

My ferret, Rambo, loves to go away in the car. He has a security blanket and we can’t leave home without it. One day we went to the drive up window at the bank and everyone wanted to see Rambo. So they opened the drawer and I made a ferret deposit. He absolutely loved the attention he received at the bank and they returned him through the deposit drawer. They wanted to give him a doggy treat but he declined the offer.
